Another Book Review? Sacre Bleu! (apparently not Sacre Le Bleu)

I so obviously don’t know French.

Anyway, would you believe it? I read another book? Why yes I did. Truthfully, it’s a very short book, under 100 pages, so I don’t know if that’s as impressive, but whatever. Stories can be all types of lengths. Let’s get to the review, yes?

New Pride

Blurb taken from Goodreads.

New town, new love, new terror…

Kicked out by his alpha father for nearly exposing their secret, seventeen-year-old Richard Leone is a shape-shifter without a pride. Alone, homeless, and hungry, he forms a tenuous friendship with Derek, a power-hungry shifter from an unstable rogue pride. It’s either that, or starve. Until they encounter a gorgeous brunette, Molly, partying with friends around a campfire. Richard immediately feels a connection with her, and something about her calls to him. Almost as if she was supposed to be his mate.

But when Molly is kidnapped, Richard must take on the entire rogue pride to save her and keep his human town safe from harm. Derek offers him a deal: he’ll help Richard take on the pride to rescue Molly, but only to secure his place as alpha. And once that happens, the humans could be in even more danger.

My Review:

3.5 stars. While I did enjoy this very much, it was hard to get into. Simply because its a short story/novella. I longed for more character and relationship development. There isn’t really time for that and I understand, but man, I wanted more background on Richard and Molly and the whole world.

I did love the action. Well-written and detailed, it created create tension and propelled the story forward. Were-cats are not done as much and I really felt like Ms. Diamond must have done some animal research because the cat-ness felt very real.

I also thought that the magic element felt very real and possible. The nakedness before and after shifting as well as the primal elements that existed in the human side. Same with territory and such. especially the sparring and fighting.

I wished for more about the area, the time period (I’m guessing 70s), and the characters’ day to day lives. Again, changing my expectations when it’s not a full blown novel.

I also don’t trust Derek because he didn’t tell Richard about Steve’s tastes earlier. Seems suspicious.

It also certainly whet my appetite for the full novel: Shifting Pride. Very sneaky, Ms. Diamond. You sucked me in.

So, go buy a copy for a mere $2.99 on Amazon. Or go visit Laura Diamond and tell her I sent you. 🙂
