I read a lot but wasn’t much a reviewer… I know, that’s terrible! lynn11802 is my penname. I attempted writing a bit but I’m not very good at it.
So, a total fan question now, what actors do you picture as the main characters in Phase? I have my own little list in my head but I was wondering how you pictured them. Apparently I’m not creative enough to make up the characters in my own imagination so I pick actors to play the parts… and I do this religiously… I know I’m weird

Just read Phase… for the second time I’m a 26 years old mother of 2 who loves a good paranormal story. I love Sophie’s personality and the “goody-two-shoes” side of her. Not all teens like to party, curse, and have sex! And I love the fact that she attends church, most teen stories do not address religion at all these days. I only read this book because I loved your work on fanfiction.net. I think it’s wonderful that fanfiction writers are able to find success with their writing. I can’t wait for the second book!

I’m starting to think that students (wrongly) believe that if they don’t initially care for a character that the book in question must not be well-written. While this isn’t to proclaim that endless parades of theory open up a book for some students, the dismissive standard that “I didn’t like ____________” often lead students to refuse any further investigation.

So, those equally interesting questions about how Holden is divorced from any other real familial or social connection become lost in a sea of students’ indifference. Books that remain at a remove from empathy, I fear, are becoming harder and harder to teach and get students to engage with critically. The true danger is, of course, that a lot of the major classic and contemporary literature opts for the remove from empathy.
